1840年代のゴールドラッシュ前、金は大変貴重でした。
少ない金をできるだけ豪華に見せるため、線状にした金を用いる「カンティーユ」という技法が使われました。こちらの作品はぱっと見ゴージャスですが、信じられないほと軽くできています。
Before the gold rush in 1840s, Gold was really precious.
To show gorgeous as much as possible with very limited gold, the technique called "Cannetille" was used. Cannetitille makes the gold like a thread. Therefore, this looks very gorgeous but very very light.

18世紀に入るとダイヤモンドはシルバーにセッティングされ、裏側にゴールドが施されています。
これは補強が目的で、当時のゴールドはまだまだ脇役に過ぎなかったのです。金が主役になるのは、ヴィクトリア時代になってからなのです。
In the befogging of 18th century, diamond were set in silver and covered in gold at the back. Gold was used just to strengthen the piece.
It was from the Victorian era when the gold got a lot of attention.

1850年頃のダイヤモンドと1920年ごろのダイヤモンドの指輪を並べてみました。
同じ宝石でも、カットやセッティングの仕方でこんなに違うんですね😱
1850年ごろのリングは、ローズカットダイヤで後ろが塞がってます。

These are diamond rings. One was made in 1850s and the other one was made in 1920s.
Both are set with diamond but different ways of cuttings and settings.

I compare the diamond rings made in 1920s
and in 1850s. They are both used the diamonds, but the brightness is completely
different. This is because the way of cutting and setting are different. The diamond
with the older ring is rose cut and the back of the diamond is covered up.

こちらはお酒の神様バッカス。髪にブドウを飾り、お酒が入っていることを表現するためにほんのりほっぺが赤くなっています。これは色を塗っているのではなく、貝の色の層を利用しています。
